SHEARER STEALS THE SHOW WITH LAST-CORNER THRILLER IN CHICAGOLAND OVERTIME
JOLIET, IL — Racing fans were treated to an absolute nail biter at Chicagoland, as Bud Shearer snatched victory with a breathtaking last lap, last corner pass to win the race in a dramatic Green White Checkered (GWC) finish.
Defending series champion Bud Shearer bounced back from his heartbreaking season-opening loss at Talladega Superspeedway in dramatic fashion Sunday night, capturing the victory at Chicagoland Speedway with a breathtaking last-lap pass in overtime.
In a race filled with cautions, strategy, and tire management, Shearer tracked down last week’s winner, Jeffrey Ledford, and completed a thrilling pass in the final set of corners during the Green-White-Checkered finish to steal the victory in one of the season’s most exciting endings so far.

The night began with Dennis Warnes securing the pole position with a blistering 31.152-second lap, while Season 5 champion Robert Conn lined up alongside him on the front row. Chicagoland quickly proved once again why it remains one of the most demanding intermediate tracks on the schedule, forcing drivers to carefully manage tire wear, long-run speed, and track position throughout the event.
The race got off to a chaotic start almost immediately. On Lap 1, Oren Russell — who endured a violent flip in last week’s race at Talladega — found trouble once again after making contact with Joshua Pannell. The incident sent Pannell sideways before additional contact from Brennan McKee pushed him back up the racetrack, collecting Chantelle Pottle and Sebastien Chenail in the process. Both drivers suffered significant damage.
Just a few laps later on the Lap 4 restart, another major incident unfolded when Christopher Barker struggled to get going from the outside lane of the second row. Barker was tagged from behind, spinning across the track and collecting several more drivers in another early-race pileup.
While the opening stages tested patience and survival, the race eventually settled into a strategic battle. Teams were limited to just three sets of tires for the entire event, placing enormous pressure on crew chiefs to balance track position against tire conservation as cautions repeatedly reset the field.
Conn Dominates Early, Shearer Closes It Out
For much of the night, Robert Conn appeared to have the strongest truck in the field. Conn dominated stretches of the race in clean air, recording the fastest lap of the race with a 31.199-second lap while leading a race-high 28 laps.
However, the complexion of the race changed when the sixth and final caution flew late in the event, setting up a dramatic overtime finish.
Shearer, who had methodically worked his way toward the front throughout the race while conserving his equipment, lined up alongside Ledford for the final restart. As the field took the white flag, Shearer applied heavy pressure and closed rapidly on Ledford entering the final corners. In a perfectly timed move, Shearer completed the pass coming to the checkered flag, stealing the win in spectacular fashion.
The victory marks an important early-season statement for the defending champion after narrowly missing out on victory just one week earlier at Talladega.
LOOKING AHEAD
Although early in the season, the drivers and crews will get a chance to catch their breath. The series is off for the next two weeks for a brief, early-season break before ramping back up. Racing action will return under the neon lights with a visit to Las Vegas Motor Speedway on May 31st.
