XAVIER REGELBRUGGE ROCKS AT THE ROCK

Author: Oskar Jensen·

Xavier Regelbrugge delivered a near-perfect performance at Rockingham Speedway Sunday night, ending Joseph Smith’s win streak and capturing his first victory of the season.

Regelbrugge started the race from the pole and led the opening lap before Smith took control on Lap 2. Smith looked set for another dominant night, leading through the opening green-flag run and the first round of pit stops.

The battle for the lead intensified after Vincent Provenzano and Michael Badra made contact in front of the leaders while Smith and Regelbrugge raced side-by-side. Regelbrugge capitalized on the moment and cleared Smith to retake the lead.

After another cycle of green-flag pit stops, Smith reclaimed the lead on Lap 101, but the advantage lasted only one lap. Smith made contact with the wall exiting Turn 4, allowing Regelbrugge to move back out front while Smith suffered right-front damage.

As Smith struggled with the damage, Regelbrugge began pulling away and eventually lapped the field up to fourth place before a caution on Lap 127 effectively secured the race for him. Smith received the lucky dog after pitting moments before the caution but was unable to recover through the field with the damage.

Regelbrugge drove away in the closing laps to secure the win before celebrating with a massive burnout on the frontstretch.

Following an emotional celebration and massive burnout on the frontstretch, Regelbrugge climbed from the car visibly overwhelmed with emotion, dedicating the victory to his late grandfather, who passed away in February.

When asked after the race how he was able to battle past Smith, Regelbrugge praised the level both drivers were operating at throughout the event.

Well, Joseph (Smith) and I were on a completely different plane of existence, to be quite frank,

Regelbrugge said after the race.

He also explained how lap traffic ultimately helped him regain control of the race after initially losing the lead during the first round of green-flag pit stops.

I was able to use lap traffic to get back around him, and after that, I just set sail.

After missing the season opener at Daytona International Speedway, Regelbrugge now faces the challenge of maximizing points every week if he hopes to climb back into contention for the regular-season championship.

With momentum now firmly on his side, Regelbrugge will look to continue his strong start to the season when the series heads to Portland International Raceway next week.
