Schaefer Survives the Clash at Charlotte, Claims Season Opening Victory
CONCORD, N.C. — The racing season is officially underway, and if the Opening Clash at Charlotte Motor Speedway is any indicator, fans are in for an electrifying year. Reece Schaefer outlasted a highly competitive field in a 100 lap thriller on the 1.5 mile oval, claiming the checkered flag and the first bragging rights of the new season.
The preseason style exhibition race served as the perfect playground for the field to get acquainted with their new cars. With a fresh injection of added horsepower and several new drivers making their series debut, the race proved to be a challenging but incredibly fun test of skill right out of the gate. The speed was evident early on, as Jordan Traas laid down a blistering qualifying lap of 29.784 seconds to earn the pole position and lead the pack to the green flag.
To add to the opening night excitement, the league introduced a unique, high pressure format that forced drivers to be just as smart on pit road as they were on the track. The race was broken up by planned stages, starting with a grueling first stint that required all drivers to make a mandatory four tire pit stop under green flag conditions before a planned caution around Lap 30. The stakes were high, failing to take all four tires or missing the green flag stop entirely meant a post race disqualification.
Following a second planned caution near Lap 80 that bunched the field back up, the race culminated in a high-octane, 15 lap dash to the finish line. The flow of the evening kept everyone on their toes, punctuated by six cautions resulting in 21 pace laps. Despite the interruptions, the racing remained fiercely competitive, featuring eight distinct lead changes as drivers swapped paint at the front of the pack.
When the green flag waved for the final sprint, it was Reece Schaefer who seized control. Schaefer, who proved to be the driver to beat all night by leading a race high 28 laps, expertly navigated the closing moments. He crossed the start/finish line just 0.321 seconds ahead of the runner up in a nail biting finish. For the hard fought victory, Schaefer took home the grand prize of $50.00 and a brand new league tumbler to celebrate a perfect start to the season.
